Now the country is determined to change that story, launching an ambitious push to build semiconductors and data centres on its own soil, in a bid to move from merely consuming technology to actually manufacturing the components that power it.

The quest to make chips

At the heart of this ambition lies the dream of a domestic semiconductor industry, because chips are the tiny brains inside every phone, car and appliance, and a nation that cannot make them remains vulnerable to supply shocks and to the decisions of distant rivals.

Building this capacity from scratch is extraordinarily difficult, since advanced chip fabrication is among the most complex and capital-intensive activities humans have ever attempted, requiring astronomical investment, rare expertise and years of patient effort.

India has responded with generous incentives to lure manufacturers and to seed its first major fabrication plants, betting that even if it cannot immediately match the most cutting-edge factories abroad, it can carve out a meaningful role in the global supply chain.

Running in parallel is an explosive growth in data centres, the vast warehouses of computer servers that store our information and, increasingly, perform the heavy calculations that artificial intelligence demands, a form of infrastructure now considered strategically vital.

India’s enormous and rapidly digitising population generates staggering volumes of data, and both domestic firms and global players are pouring money into building the local capacity to process and store it, rather than relying on servers located overseas.

This boom is about far more than convenience, because keeping data and computing power within the country touches on questions of privacy, national security and economic sovereignty, all of which have risen sharply up the political agenda in recent times.

Ambition meets reality

Yet the road ahead is strewn with obstacles, from the reliable and affordable electricity that these power-hungry facilities require, to the shortage of highly specialised talent and the fierce competition from other nations chasing exactly the same prize.

There is also the delicate balance between welcoming foreign investment and expertise, which India badly needs, and nurturing genuinely homegrown capability, so that the country ends up as a true creator of technology rather than merely an assembly line for others.

Whether India succeeds will shape not only its own economic future but also the wider global technology landscape, and if its silicon ambition pays off, the world may soon speak of the country not just as a software power, but as a hardware power too.
